Colds Are Caused by Viruses
More than 200 viruses can cause a cold. These viruses are spread by direct contact, sharing of objects that carry the virus, or coughing/sneezing droplets of virus into the air. The incubation period for a cold-the time between exposure to the virus and the beginning of syndromes-is usually 1 to 3 days. You cannot catch a cold by becoming chilled, having wet feet, or going outdoors with wet hair. However, if you begin to experience the symptoms of a cold, the symptoms may feel more severe if you are run down or under emotional stress.

Symtoms of the Common Cold:
Most people experience cold symptoms in a similar manner. The beginning of a cold is rapid, starting with a burning in the throat or nose, followed by a runny nose, sneezing, and an overall feeling of tiredness and achiness. A sore or scratchy throat may develop early, but usually does not last more than a day. The nose has a watery, clear discharge with congestion during the first few days of a cold. This is followed by thicker mucus, perhaps with a cough. The cough is usually not severe with a cold, but it can continue for up to two weeks even though the other cold symptoms disappear. Patients with respiratory diseases such as bronchitis or asthma may have a worsening of their symptoms during a cold. Most of the symptoms of a cold disappear within four to 10 days after they begin.

Best Prevention Methods:
There is no cure for the common cold. The best prevention is to wash hands frequently, and cover a sneeze or cough with a tissue, since these simple steps will cut down on virus transmission. No vaccines are available, although researchers have developed vaccines that work against some viruses that cause colds. Scientists are also looking for an effective antiviral drug that would work against all the virus strains that cause a cold, without causing side effects.
