Once you have discovered your average total daily caffeine intake, you may find you are exceeding the safe limit (100-200 mg not more often than every 3-4 hours for the average, healthy adult). Exceeding these doses can cause caffeinism¡±.Symptoms include nervousness, irritability, restlessness, excitement, headache,muscular twitching, insomnia, urination,stomach upset, flushed face, agitation and racing heartbeat. Many persons have disordered thoughts and resuspicious or hostile. A very sensitive person may experience these symptoms at lower doses than those considered safe. To discover whether any of these symptoms are caused by caffeine, stop usage. If the symptoms disappear within 4-10 days, caffeine must be strongly suspected.
Caffeine is an addictive drug. You will suffer withdrawal symptoms beginning about 12-24 hours after your last ingestion. Headache, the major symptom, may last for more than a week. Patients also complain of symptoms that do not last as long, such as sleepiness, general laziness, decreased alertness, irritability, yawning, nausea, runny nose, poor concentration, anxiety and nervousness.
An additional problem with caffeine stems from continued usage. Most people use it
to experience the well-known lift in energy it provides. However, with continued
usage, this ¡°high¡± is less and less prominent, until an individual needs caffeine just
to ¡°get moving¡± in the morning. This phenomenon is known as tolerance. People
increase their dosage again and again in an attempt to recapture those pleasant st-
imulant effects. The eventual result is the onset of caffeinism described earlier. The
remedy is to stop usage of caffeine, obtain normal sleep and allow your natural energy
pattern to re-emerge may produce significantly disruptive changes in mood and beh-
avior when intake of habitually consumed caffeinated foods and beverages is restricted.
