Prevnar protects against childhood ear infection
Prevnar, which protects infants and young children against invasive pneumococcal disease, also protects children from acute otitis media. The ear infection, caused by S. pneumoneae, is one of the most common bacterial infections in children and can be serious. A trial of the Wyeth-Lederle vaccine found a 57% reduction in otitis media caused by the seven pneumococcal serotypes that are targeted by the vaccine.
