in that their symptoms are exacerbated by coffee.
Caffeine is also a major but usually unrecognized cause of vague, sometimes severe,
abdominal pain. These problems may be due to the potent stimulation of gastric
acid secretion seen with cafeinated coffee.
Caffeine is also reported to lower esophageal sphincter, contributing to the symptoms
of gastroesophageal reflux disease in many patients.

2. Post-Operative Headache:
Post-operative headache is one of the most frequent side-effects of general anesthesia.
Several anesthesiologists have offered the theory that it is due to caffeine withdrawal
during the pre-operative fasting state and post-operative period rather than to the
anesthetic medications, as commonly believed. In a study designed to test this hypothe-
sis the investigators discovered that for each 100 mg increment in pre-operative caffeine consumption, there was a 12% decrease in the occurrence of headache.

3. Hip Fracture:
Caffeine has been associated with increased calcium in the urine and a negative calcium
balance. Preliminary studies also link it to osteoporosis. Thus, it is not surprising that the highly regarded Framingham Study discovered a link between caffeine ingestion and the incidence of hip fracture. Caffeine ingestion greater than two cups of coffee or four cups of tea daily increased the risk of fracture by 53% in the subsequent two-year period.

4. Coffee Blues
If your patients are complaining of flu-like symptoms that don¡¯t seem to get better, tell them to have a cup of coffee and call you in the morning.
New research has shown that caffeine withdrawal is real, and people who don¡¯t consume their normal amounts of coffee or cola drinks experience significant symptoms which include headaches, fatigue, moodiness, depression and anxiety. ¡°Stopping caffeine use ¡®cold turkey¡¯ in adults can produce a severe and clinically significant withdrawal syndrome,¡± says Roland Griffiths, Ph.D., one of the investigators in the s< ÀúÀÛ±ÇÀÚ © ¾à±¹½Å¹® ¹«´ÜÀüÀç ¹× Àç¹èÆ÷±ÝÁö >
